I recently read an article about how woven plastic mats are great to hand out to the homeless population. They’re water resistant, lice resistant, and it keeps people off the ground which can decrease the spread of disease. Tomorrow I’m going to be going downtown to volunteer with The Sidewalk Project, an organization that helps alleviate the issues that arise from homelessness. The last time I worked with them, myself and a group of volunteers built a small but super sturdy shelter for an encampment that exists on the outskirts of Vegas. The encampment is home to about 30/35 people. It’s especially important during the pandemic that these people be allowed to live in one space. So far the organization has built round 16 shelters, with around 14-19 more needed to be created. Tomorrow I want to pitch to them that we also create these mats for people who are in tents or on the ground around LA, without shelters. I’m bringing this small one in to show them what the mats could look like, and see if they’ll allow me to use their discarded wood from the shelters to build larger, more permanent looms.
